Look, I understand that it has to do with net metering or the electric meter and connecting that to your actual equipment but beyond that I am lost. Anyone know why these things are so important?

In short, inverters convert the electricity that solar panels produce into electricity that's "useful" for the appliances and lighting in your home. Solar panels collect the sun’s energy and turn it into direct current (DC) electricity. Most homes and businesses, however, use alternating current (AC) electricity to power appliances, lighting, etc. Inverters change the DC electricity from your panels into usable AC electricity.
