I live in upstate New York and want to get a clearer picture of what the incentives are for going solar. I know about the federal tax credit and have heard that there's an NY state tax credit as well. Are there any other incentives?

Hi hudsonny,

There are some great incentives available in New York State at the moment - in fact, New York's solar incentives are some of the best in the country.

The main programs that make solar a great deal in New York State are:

-The Megawatt Block Incentive, which provides an up-front discount on the cost of installing a system. (The most generous incentives currentlyavailable through this program are actually in Upstate NY.) Under this program, you will (at the time of writing) receive a discount of $0.70 per every watt of solar capacity that you have installed if you live in the upstate region - or about $4,200 off the price of a 6kW solar system.

-New York's Solar Tax Credit, which saves you 25% on the cost of solar, regardless of whether you purchase or lease your solar energy system.

-Net Metering, which guarantees that anyone with a solar energy system gets paid the full retail rate for the electricity that their system produces.

Hope this helps! Good luck going solar.
