I am in the process of going solar and have found an installer but have been comparing different panel brand options and I'm wondering if weight is a factor I should be considering? I have a spanish tile roof and I worry that a really heavy panel won't suit my roof type. What does a average sized solar system typically weigh?

A single solar panel, which usually measures around 3 ft x 5 ft, will weigh anywhere from 30 to 45 lbs. The mounting for your solar panels will add some additional weight. Solar is good for most roof types, including Spanish tiles – the only roofs that aren't ideal for solar are slate and cedar shingles. You may need to find a specialized installer if your roof is composed of either of those materials.

In the vast majority of situations you don't need to worry about panels being too heavy for your roof, but your solar installer will do an inspection beforehand to make sure everything is sound. Many installers also offer warranties for the work that they do in the very rare case that something happens to your roof when your panels are installed.
