If I have the option should I pick a small solar company or a big one ? Is there an advantage to wirking with one or the other? I have received a few calls from solar city and sungevity and am wondering if they have better pricing.

Hi there! I am the owner of a small Solar Install company in Albuquerque, NM. Let me see if I can give you a few reasons from my perspective on the benefits of going with a smaller install firm.

  1. Shop Local, Think Global. You have already taken the first step in thinking global by considering a solar install, so the next step is to shop local. Chances are the smaller companies tend to be local companies. By spending your $$ with a company that ultimately spends their money local, you help to support you local economy and all the benefits that provides.

  2. Maintenance and Service. If you choose to go with a larger company that is based outside your area, then getting someone to come fix an issue can take longer, thereby keeping your system offline longer which equals less $$ in your pocket. A smaller local company can get to your system back up quicker because they can get to your property sooner.

  3. System designs that meet your project and budget. As a smaller company, I am not tied to one particular product line or kit size like the other larger firms in my area. Also, because I design the system specifically to the customer's project needs, the components that are used allow for the system to maximize production with the lowest cost. Working with a smaller company like mine will allow to work more hand in hand with the installer to make sure everything is handled to your specifications.

  4. Experience without the high cost. I have been in the industry over 12 years and have designed many PV systems for homes. Because I have been doing Solar for so long, I wear all the hats in the business, from designer to electrician to business manager. Because of my low overhead I am able to offer low pricing without sacrificing quality products and workmanship.

I hope this helps.
